Why Are States Opening Up?

I'm back from Spring Break!

Unfortunately, per usual, the news isn't that great.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky (cover photo) said at a media briefing that the most recent seven-day average was an increase of 7% from the previous week. She is becoming increasingly concerned by this trend, as she feels that there is potential for the epidemic curve to soar again.

This news comes amid rampant spring breakers in Florida flooding the beaches with absolutely no masks or social distances. Currently, only 14% of the US population is fully vaccinated. So, are our elected leaders listening to these warnings?

Um, no.

Arizona is latest state to lift its mask mandate and is allowing bars and restaurants to reopen fully - joining Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota and Texas. As of Friday afternoon, many North Carolina businesses were permitted to reopen fully. Connecticut and Maryland have also announced plans to roll back mitigation efforts.

Currently, the best way to reduce the risk of a soaring epidemic curve is to communicate ways to minimize (and not necessarily eliminate) risk.

It is worth reminding people that the end is in sight. Keep the spotlight on vaccinations - the more people who get the vaccine, the more they can tell people that they feel great and had no side effects. We need to keep pushing these points home.

Have a great Monday and keep staying safe!
