Hospitals will now begin sending information on coronavirus patients directly to the Department of Health and Human Services instead of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention due to new instructions from the Trump administration. This change will take effect on Wednesday. Previously, hospitals had reported this information to the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network, which the agency describes as the nation's most widely used health care-associated infection tracking system. They tracked information such as how many beds are available, the number of ventilators available, and how many COVID-19 patients are occupying hospitals.
According to Department of Health and Human Services, the goal is to streamline data collection, which will inform federal decisions. This news unfortunately comes alongside concerns that Trump has been ignoring and discrediting America's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, so many feel that this is an additional step in ignoring experts' advice.
One of the most important things to do in this time is listen to our experts. They are referred to as experts for a reason; they know what they are talking about. Trump's attempt to ignore the numbers they are reporting or the advice that they are giving is very dangerous, and will result in the worsening of the virus in America. As a rising senior, I am looking at my entire senior year likely being mostly online if we do not do something to change the spread of this virus. Please. Listen. Wear a mask.
