On Friday, the White House said that President Donald Trump was suffering from "mild symptoms" of COVID-19. Trump tweeted around 1 a.m. that he had tested positive for the virus, the night after he had returned from an afternoon political fundraiser without telling the crowd he had been exposed to Hope Hicks. (see previous blog post)
Melania Trump and several others in the White House have also tested positive. Barron Trump however, tested negative, as TikTok will be happy to know. (If confused about this, I will link below a helpful article for more information on this subject.)
Both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have tested negative. Mike Pence tested negative this morning and "remains in good health." Trump's Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett has also tested negative.
Here's where it gets slightly interesting:
White House chief of staff Mark Meadows tried to assure the public that Trump was conducting business as usual, even though he has also confirmed that the White House knew Hope Hicks had tested positive before Trump attended the fundraiser. Several staffers were then pulled from the trip, but Trump still didn't cancel, even though he had been exposed to Hope Hicks.
Trump is 74 years old and clinically obese, putting him at high risk for serious complications.
Biden and Harris have both tweeted similar messages. Biden's message reads that he and his wife “send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family.”
A very busy Friday thus far! I hope that the President and the First Lady make a full recovery, but I also really hope that this causes Trump to take the virus more seriously. Perhaps his voters will begin wearing more masks in public and we can begin to really get this thing under control.
