Texas and its (Lack of) Mask Mandate

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced today that Texas is lifting its mask mandate that was imposed eight months ago. Texas is also apparently lifting other COVID-19 restrictions that will allow businesses to open at full capacity.
This decision comes as governors across the US have been easing coronavirus restrictions, despite advice from health experts that the pandemic is far from over.
We know from the past that rollbacks of COVID-19 rules only lead to more spikes in cases and hospitalizations. While Texas' coronavirus numbers are dropping, they are not out of the woods yet.
In recent weeks, North Dakota, Montana, and Iowa have also lifted mask orders. I can only hope that no more states follow suit, and people still continue wearing masks in public with or without a mask mandate to enforce their behavior.
It's rather interesting to me. Health experts have told an entire population to wear a piece of cloth over their face to protect them from a deadly virus. One would think that this would be easy to follow; if you don't want to risk getting the virus, put the cloth over your mouth. It's very similar to seatbelts; if you don't want to risk flying out the windshield of your car, buckle up.
So why do we have so many issues with masks?
It seems like such an easy way to say safe!
