Sports in Sonoma County

Cross-country, girls golf, and boys tennis were given the okay to start practicing February 1st locally. Scrimmages have started in some cases, and competitions are set to begin the first week in March.

Obviously, the school board and the California Department of Health are trying to make sure that low-risk sports are the only ones currently operating. Cross-country, boys tennis, and girls golf are all played outside and are rather distant. Baseball, softball, swim, and track and field teams are all ready for a spring competition schedule because they are all outside as well. Soccer is slated to be played in April.

Now, this is where I get confused. In a surprise move, the California Department of Public Health authorized the return of football with very vague guidelines. Ah yes, the sport of football. Seems to be completely safe to me. It's not a contact sport or anything.

I know that Montgomery's football team has already begun conditioning, and according to the Press Democrat, they can start allowing contact practices to begin Friday. I even heard in my history class that they now have six games slated before the end of the year. However, I doubt that spectators will be allowed to watch due to the COVID-19 risk.

Principals of the 13 North Bay League schools are going to meet on Thursday to go over potential schedules and other issues. I guess we will see what happens then.

In other big news, the Santa Rosa City School Board passed a resolution that middle and high schools would be okay to open starting April 26th. Elementary schools would begin April 1st.

If this actually turns out, I'll be really excited. However, I don't want to get my hopes up now just to have them dashed later. Therefore, I'll expect the worst and then be pleasantly surprised if anything happens. I think that if it's safe, I do want to go back to school.

I know that some kids aren't going to follow all the rules, but here's my advice for those who feel that going back is too unsafe. It's rather simple: just stay away from those kids and keep your mask up. Chances are, they wouldn't pull anything like that in class, so you should be safe there. Then if they are being unsafe outside, just leave the area and find someplace else to be. I don't know, just a thought.
