Protesting Safely

I attended a peaceful protest today in my town (Santa Rosa, California). I am writing this as I picked up some things during my time marching that I believe will benefit others in being prepared. Marches can often be long without many breaks, so snacks may be needed. Below is a list of things (I recommend) one needs in order to stay safe and healthy during a protest:
A mask
A water bottle
Granola bars (or other smaller snacks)
Hand sanitizer
Sunglasses (if hot, but also to protect from tear gas)
A hat (it can get really hot in the sun)
Sunscreen
Clothing appropriate to the temperature (layers if it's cold, etc)
Good walking shoes (I CANNOT stress this enough; if not, you will get blisters)
Long pants (often protests require kneeling on the ground, which will hurt your knees without pants on)
A small backpack (to carry your stuff)
Hair ties (for heat purposes and also so hair does not get pulled if a scuffle happens)
Cash (if needed to buy food or cab fare home)
ID
Phone (to record things on)
This is probably obvious, but do not bring any weapons, drugs, or valuables that you do not want to lose or be arrested with. Stay safe and stay strong!
