President Biden's Dilemma

President Joe Biden is meeting today with 10 Republican senators who have drawn up their own, smaller counter-proposal to his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 rescue plan. But will he make a deal with them?

Well, on one hand, he has promised to forge unity over divided party lines. But on the other hand, the Republicans' proposal is less than a third of the size of the economic shock treatment the White House believes the United States needs.

Biden's original legislation proposes direct payments to most Americans and extends unemployment benefits until September. It will also raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, and provides hundreds of billions of dollars to expand coronavirus testing so schools can reopen and citizens can get vaccinated quicker.

So there is a dilemma here. President Biden must now evaluate whether this new proposal is of good faith and an olive branch to link the two parties, or a bluff calling exercise that will undermine his authority. In addition, if he were to accept this deal, he knows that he risks losing support from Capitol Hill Democrats.

I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens, even though I wish I could be there to directly influence the decision.
