Please. Stay. Home.

The Fourth of July lands on Saturday this year. But please stay home during this Fourth of July weekend. Cases are spiking in California, as well as in multiple other states. Officials are warning that the best thing to do at this point is to just stay home and celebrate the holiday with immediate family.

Yesterday, the United States reported nearly 50,000 new coronavirus cases (case numbers are displayed in a graph on the cover photo). This is the highest case load we have had yet. You can see by the graph that we reached our first peak in April, and then leveled out, and now are reaching an even higher peak. This is not the second wave, but instead a continuance of the first one. Ohio, Kansas, and Louisiana (all previously stable states) just recorded some of their highest single-day totals in weeks. North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas set records for highest single-day totals on Wednesday. Case numbers are increasing in 38 states.

Here is a list of measures that some state governors are implementing in order to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.

  • in Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Wolf signed an expanded order for mask wearing

  • in Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordered that a large amount of indoor bars be closed

  • in Arizona, Gov. Doug Ducey decided to close the state's water parks - he also ordered bars, gyms, and movie theaters to close for 30 days

  • in Nebraska, state leaders encouraged holiday cookout guest lists to make contact tracing easier if a party caught the virus

  • Oregon Health Authorities are encouraging people to simply stay inside for this holiday

So please. Skip the party. Stay home. Stay safe.

I get that many people want their summer. I know - I want one too. But, I would rather not run the risk of getting the virus or getting others I love sick by having a summer shrouded in fear. I would rather stay in my room and watch Netflix.

To be fair, I feel that maybe one can have a socially distanced party. If it is limited to two families and they are six feet away from each other with masks (and outside), the risk is relatively low. Maybe base your festivities off of that model.

I am disappointed about losing my summer, but this is for the greater good. It means that I can get back to seeing my friends sooner, and have a better chance of getting an actual senior year. It would really not be fun if I had to spend my senior year distance learning and going to class once a week.
