No More Business Reopenings for the Next Two Weeks

Sonoma County Health Officer Dr. Sundari Mase announced on Wednesday that there will be no more advances in reopening businesses or other economic activity during the next two weeks. This announcement came in response to a recent increase in COVID-19 cases that included a few patients needing intensive care, the first viral outbreak at a nursing home, and a number of infections from people getting the virus from someone at their workplace.

Most recently, Sonoma County had allowed restaurants, wineries, and breweries to resume outdoor dining with social distancing guidelines in place. Gavin Newsom announced earlier this week that Sonoma, among other counties, would be cleared to reopen malls, barbershops, hair salons, and in-person church services. Mase decided to stop these reopenings instead of complying with Newsom's orders.

Mase says that her greatest concern was the recent jump in number of cases per 100,000 residents (in the last 2 weeks). Two weeks ago, Sonoma County was sitting at 20 cases, while this week we have jumped to 41 cases for every 100,000 residents. From earlier articles I have read, I believed that Newsom's original criteria for Phase 2 reopenings (such as schools, malls, etc) included having only 1 case per 10,000 residents (or 10 per 100,000) that he recently (May 18th) eased to 25 cases per 100,000 residents, so this is an interesting development.

This may answer one of the questions teens have been having recently. The ACT that is supposed to be held June 13th is an increasing source of anxiety as their website simply says that test centers are subject to change their status anytime between now and June 13th. This was confusing for me and other friends that are taking the ACT, and do not know if our test centers will still be administering the test or if it will be canceled. Having read this article on Sonoma County's current reopening plans, I think it is somewhat safe to say that the ACT will most likely be canceled, but I could be wrong; I have been wrong before. But as the ACT is in 2 weeks and 2 days, and Sonoma County is not reopening anything new in 2 weeks, I have drawn my own conclusions. Even though, I will be studying and preparing in case we do still take it and I encourage all of the juniors reading to do the same.
