Nightmare Fuel

Those who followed the news yesterday know that a large group of Trump supporters broke into the Capitol and caused everyone inside to go into lockdown. I personally found out right after my English class, in the middle of watching another nightmarish version of Macbeth where the three witches are actually teenage vampires that vandalize cemeteries (for homework, I didn't watch that in my free time). But I digress.
Ever since the beginning of quarantine and this pandemic, I have had really strange dreams. Upon asking my friends and consulting numerous news articles, I have come to the conclusion that this was normal; many changes in one's life can lead to increasingly strange and vibrant dreams.
Going upstairs to see MSNBC and my dad pacing around our living room was a different type of nightmare than the ones I previously have had, because this nightmare was real. Physically watching a threat to our democracy so easily break into one of the biggest symbols of our democracy was a little bit worse than running until you wake up.
Because, unfortunately, you can't wake up from real life. Unless we are in the Matrix and I just haven't figured out how to unplug myself from the fake world.
I was left speechless yesterday. Where were the police when we needed them? How come it took so long for the National Guard to be requested? How was it so easy for thousands of Trump supporters to break into the Capitol? How did only one person die?
We saw disproportionate amounts of force being used during the Black Lives Matter protests when the protests were peaceful! However, these rioters were actively breaking windows and threatening the safety of government officials, and it took around 3-4 hours before I saw tear gas being set off. Let's check the white privilege and hypocrisy here, because it is blatant.
Top that all off with a wonderfully horrendous speech from Trump. I will summarize it now: "You are all lovely people, the election was rigged, but go home." Wow, that was super helpful. Thanks so much.
America, we are better than this. This is not who we are, and this is not what we represent. Thankfully, with our newest two Democratic senators, Ossoff and Warnock, we can hope to start making big change for the better soon.
