Johnson & Johnson's Vaccine

On Saturday, the FDA authorized Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use. On Sunday, senior Biden administration officials warned that the supply of the new vaccine would greatly fluctuate for the next month.

This was said in order to lower expectations that this authorization will mean a steady new stream of doses. The officials said that the company will deliver 3.9 million shots this week, but not the next.

Johnson & Johnson will deliver around 16 million doses by the end of March, but the majority of those doses will be coming at the end of the month. This is different than the company's original pledge of 37 million by the end of March; this is because the firm is still trying to scale up its production at its new Baltimore plant.

Earlier Sunday, a committee of independent advisers to the CDC voted 12 in favor of the vaccine and none against, with one recusal. However, the committee did not weigh in on which groups should be given this vaccine first.

Johnson & Johnson's vaccine requires only one shot instead of the usual two, but only has about a 72% efficacy compared to Pfizer's and Moderna's vaccines that are about 95% protective.

Do with that information what you will, but personally, I think that I would take any safe COVID-19 vaccine over no COVID-19 vaccine.

Hopefully, the Baltimore plant will get off the ground and more doses can be made quicker. Now we just have to wait and see if people want to get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. We will also have to wait and see how much faster vaccine protection is gained in the United States with one shot versus two shots.

Have a great Monday!
