The Commerce Department announced today that there would be a ban enacted upon WeChat and TikTok starting on Sunday due to Trump's executive orders.
Fortunately, TikTok users are still going to be able to use the app, although they will not be able to update it starting Sunday. "The only real change as of Sunday night will be [TikTok users] won't have access to improved apps, updated apps, upgraded apps or maintenance," Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Friday morning on Fox Business.
Unfortunately, the restrictions surrounding WeChat are a bit more extensive. According to CNN, beginning Sunday, it will be illegal to host or transfer internet traffic associated with WeChat, the Department said in a release. TikTok will be held to the same restrictions starting November 12th. In simpler terms, we can have TikTok until then, but after it will not e a thing anymore.
The only way that we can fix this is if Trump approves a deal for an American company to buy TikTok or WeChat. Currently, he is weighing a proposal involving ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent, and Oracle. The deadline for a deal is November 12.
Further restrictions could still be announced later, including against other apps if they could be used as workarounds.
So, to all my fellow TikTok users, I'm sorry. I personally feel that Trump could have put energy into fixing a different part of the US rather than banning a social media app, but I digress.
Have a good weekend and enjoy TikTok while you still can.
