Donald Trump's New Views of Coronavirus

Donald Trump has come out and talked about the efficacy of masks, as well as canceled the GOP convention in Jacksonville, California. This is good news, as it appears that he is starting to listen more to Fauci and other experts' concerns about the virus. However, he refuses to budge on one subject: school reopenings.

He said on Thursday that some schools that are a part of coronavirus hotspots may need to delay schooling until infection rates go down, and that he would be asking Congress to provide $105 billion for parents in the next stimulus bill so they can decide whether to send their children to private or charter school. (Although, I don't know how that would be more helpful.)

Experts have not fully studied how infectious kids under the age of 10 are. They do not know if their transmission rates are just as high as adults. We know that kids are affected by the virus, and we have seen some dangerous long-term effects from it. Even knowing this, it appears unsafe to reopen schools, especially as students can pass on the virus to those in their home that are more at risk for complications, as well as teachers that may be immunocompromised. A study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found 24% of the nation's teachers have underlying conditions, including age, that put them at higher risk of coronavirus related complications.

Coronavirus news continues on as usual. Cases are still rising and Trump still pushes forward his economy first plan. He needs to reach out further to his supporters and encourage them to wear masks as we can begin to open the economy faster if everyone wears masks. Until we have a good vaccine, we are not out of the woods yet. Not even close.

Have a good week and keep hanging in there!
