It is Day 2 of Derek Chauvin's trial, where jurors will decide if the former police officer is guilty of murder in George Floyd's death. He faces three charges, including second-degree murder.
It is important to refer to this trial as "Derek Chauvin's Trial" instead of the "George Floyd Trial" because George Floyd is not on trial for what he has done in the past. He is a victim and he is dead because of Derek Chauvin; Chauvin is on trial here.
The saddest news of today, I believe, was hearing that four young female witnesses testified in the courtroom. The witnesses are now 18,18, 17, and 9 years old. Imagine having to witness that at 9 years old. I can't even begin to understand how much of an impact that would leave on me.
The worst part of this is that witness Danielle Frazier, 17 at the time, still blames herself for not doing more at the time. On the witness stand, she stated that she is kept up late at night apologizing to George Floyd for not physically interacting and not saving his life. However, she did video the entire thing on her phone, giving us proof as to what actually happened. What she did might not have saved George Floyd's life, but she should feel reassured that her recording turned the tide on national thoughts on racial justice.
All we can do is hope that true justice is served this time. Justice for George Floyd.
