Are We Going Back To School?

Depends on who you ask.

My teachers are split. Each period, one student asks them their thoughts. Each teacher has a slightly different answer.

One has said that he is sure the plan won't go through. Two have stated that it's likely if not extremely likely that we will go back. One is already planning what we can do for graduation. One is just seeing where things go.

Simply put, students haven't really gotten one answer, which is a little bit confusing.

So what do the facts tell us?

Now that Sonoma County is in the red tier, schools can technically immediately reopen for in-person instruction. However, this doesn't mean that they should.

County officials have instead recommended that districts stay the course and have their reopening plans accepted by county health before opening their doors to students. This is important as it will give schools continued reassurance that their safety precautions are in fact safe enough for everyone.

As of Wednesday, 29 schools have had their COVID-19 plans okayed by the county. The list includes Healdsburg Unified School District, Mark West Union School District, Petaluma Elementary School District, Rincon Valley Unified School District, Rincon Valley Unified School District, Bennett Valley Union Elementary School District and Sebastopol Union School District.

Another 19 plans submitted by schools are still under review. This list includes Santa Rosa City Schools, Windsor Unified School District, Sonoma Valley Unified School District, and Cloverdale Unified School District.

Santa Rosa City Schools announced on Wednesday the ratification of a deal between the Santa Rosa Teachers Association and the district, which was the last piece preventing returns to campus.

It looks as if the plans are going to go through, but we must stay increasingly vigilant when back at school. If infection rates increase, we will be right back where we started with no chance of going back.

Stay safe and have a great Thursday!
