A Grim Milestone

The daily death toll from COVID-19 reached a record high of 3,124 yesterday, more deaths than those suffered from the 9/11 attacks.

Experts say that the death toll will only get worse.

A new composite forecast from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projects a total of 332,000 to 362,000 coronavirus deaths by January 2 -- a not-so-happy beginning to the new year.

COVID-19 hospitalizations also reached a new high of 106,688 yesterday, and more than 221,000 new infections were reported in just one day.

Hospitals are starting to reach their maximum capacity, just as many scientists and health experts predicted. This could mean reduced health care for many kinds of patients -- not those those with coronavirus.

As they said many months ago, we are buckling in for a harsh, harsh winter. We are now beginning to see the true effects of traveling and getting together with family from Winter Break, and it really will only get worse from here as Christmas festivities promise to bring in an even larger wave.

The only good news of today is that a COVID-19 vaccine could get authorized for emergency use very soon, following the UK's lead as they received their first vaccines on Tuesday. We could begin getting the first Americans the vaccine this month.

So, let's buckle up and hope for the least amount of bumps in this ride as possible.
